Waha Ātea Opening

Last week with immense joy and pride as we officially unveiled our magnificent Waha Ātea – Te Pae Kārearea. This new entranceway isn’t just a structure; it’s a timeless symbol of our school’s connection to local history, identity, and te ao Māori. The opening was held during Matariki, was a poignant occasion for storytelling, honouring our past, celebrating our present, and envisioning our future, firmly establishing the Waha Ātea as a sacred taonga for our entire community.

Te Pae Kārearea, marks a pivotal milestone in Silverdale School’s journey of “Learn to Journey, Journey to Learn.” This ambitious project was “written by many hands over many years,” blossomed from a shared vision and a growing awareness of the vital importance of place, language, and identity in our kura.

Recognising our kura’s visual story needed richer reflection, we successfully secured Creatives in Schools funding. This enabled a powerful collaboration with the talented artist and kapa haka kaiako Lee-Anne Wade, a valued member of our local marae, and the skilled kai whakairo (carver) Poutama Heteraka, who holds deep mana whenua connections to this area.

Past Deputy Principal Kat Porter, Laura Webster, and Whaea Cerys worked closely with our creative team and ākonga, collectively exploring the fundamental questions of “Who are we? Where have we come from? What do we carry into the future?”. Whaea Lee-Anne’s profound knowledge of tikanga and kaupapa Māori, coupled with her strong relationships, proved instrumental in gathering our community’s stories and walking the whenua. Poutama then meticulously brought these narratives to life through his design, firmly grounding the Waha Ātea in Silverdale’s unique identity.

Mid-Year Achievement and Progress Report

We are now ready to share your child’s Mid-Year Achievement and Progress Report with you on Thursday 26 June. This will be emailed to you directly from SchoolTalk.

This report gives a snapshot of where your child is currently achieving in relation to the new Refreshed English Curriculum and the Refreshed Mathematics and Statistics Curriculum, Te Mātaiaho. It will show a graph of achievement outlining how your child is progressing against each of the New Zealand Curriculum expectations for Reading, Writing, Oral Language and Mathematics, along with three next steps that your child will be working towards.

In conjunction with this report we will be holding learning conversations on Wednesday 16 July and Thursday 17 July which will enable the teacher to talk to you in depth about your child’s learning. Please see the school newsletter for further details.

Learning Conservations – Wednesday 16 July and Thursday 17 July

These conversations are later that normal because of the updated New Zealand Curriculum.

The learning conversations are three-way conferences with the teacher, child and parent. Three-way conferences take the form of a conversation between the child, the parents and the teacher as they sit together and talk about the child’s learning, with the child taking an equal role. This approach give children an opportunity to share with their parents their growth as a learner. The three-way conferences are designed to achieve one or more of the following goals:

  • to help children demonstrate evidence of learning,
  • to teach children the process of reflection and self-evaluation,
  • to facilitate the development of child’s organisational and oral communication skills and to increase their self-confidence,
  • to encourage children, parents, and teachers to engage in open and honest dialogue,
  • to encourage children to accept personal responsibility for their learning.

Times for Learning Conversations are:

Wednesday 16 July 3:15pm – 6:15pm and Thursday 17 July 12:30pm – 6:15pm

On Thursday 17 July the school will close at 12.00pm, can you please collect your child at this time this is only for Thursday 17 July.

Each learning conversation session lasts for 15 minutes.
