Farewells

It is with sadness that I have accepted the resignations of Hannah Schoffelmeer who has been with us as a learning assistant working in a number of classrooms across the school.

Kate Friedwald has also resigned from her position as a part time teacher at school.

I wish them all the best for their future.

Blessing of New Classrooms

Today we had the blessing of the new classrooms. Traditionally the construction of any new building for Māori was immersed in custom and much of the work done was restricted, occurring in designated areas away from the day-to-day routine of the public. To return a building to a normal state, the sanctity of works performed needed to be lifted first. Today this is still a common practice and in general most blessings of buildings are used to prepare it for its tenure of service to the community. The dedication of a building is often conceived through the first words, the first thoughts, the first prayers and the participants in this ceremony.

Thank you to everyone who came along to share this special event with us. I would like to thank Kereama, Trish and Darren from Te Herenga Waka o Orewa Marae who led the blessing.

Te Puhi – The Maiden

The group participating in the ceremony will be led throughout by a Puhi. The Puhi should be a young girl who has not yet reached puberty. She is symbolic of new beginnings, of innocence and all things that are pure. She is consecrated through prayer and holds a special position throughout the course of the ceremony. As she leads the contingent, her steps are symbolic of the first steps taken towards removing the tapu (restriction). At the close of the formal part of our ceremonies she will receive a karakia that will return her to her former state of noa. This is followed by a koha (love offering) that acknowledges her important role in the event.

Our Te Puhi was Julz Rasmussen from Room 25. She led us with great pride and mana.

On Thursday 17 August and Friday 18 August the new classrooms will be open for teachers and students to have a look around during the day.

Also on Thursday 17 August and Friday 18 August the new classrooms will be open to our school community to come in and have a look from 8.30am – 9.00am and 3.00pm – 3.30pm.

Our reception room will be moving into one of the new classrooms sometime next week. We will be moving into the rest of the new classrooms at the end of this year to begin term 1 2024. At the moment there has been no decision what year levels will be moving into the new classrooms, this decision won’t be made until next term.

We have four spaces, two upstairs and two downstairs in the new classroom block. Each space can hold up to three classrooms with three teachers. Each space is closed off with a frosted sliding room which will stay closed during the day. Currently rooms 27/29, 31/33, 28/30 and 32/34 hold two classrooms with two teachers.

Presenters at Assemblies

Well done to our presenters at our celebration and KERI assemblies.

Parking Issues

  • Parents/caregivers parking on broken yellow lines during pick up time. I have had several community complaints about parents/caregivers parking on broken yellow lines in Longmore Lane, Stella Maris Lane and Bankside Road. Auckland Transport has contacted the school saying they will be out and issuing tickets to drivers who are parked on broken yellow lines.
  • Parents/caregivers parking across driveways during pick up time. Again I have had several complaints from our community about parents/caregivers parking across driveways during pick up times. Please show our KERI values of Kindness and Respect by not parking across people’s driveways.
  • New Visitor Parking at School. With the completion of the new classroom build we have added more visitor parking along the front driveway. These parks are for visitors at school. This is not a drop off area for you to drop your children off at school during drop off time or to pick them up at pick up time. If you are driving your child/ren to school and dropping them off or picking them up please use the stop, drop go area.
  • There is no parent parking on the school site, an option during drop off and pick up is to park away from the school and walk to school, a great way of building you and your child’s fitness and help reduce the carbon footprint at the same time.
  • Stop, Drop, Go Area. The drop off zone that borders the sloping bank will be a ‘manned’ stop, drop and go area from 8.30am to 8.55am and again from 3.00pm to 3.15pm. No parking in the stop, drop and go area until after 2.45pm. This means you will be able to stop, drop and go in a minimum of time. You do not need to get out of your car. In the afternoon your children will wait for you on the bank to be retrieved. The teacher on duty will pop your child in your vehicle and you can quickly depart. You do not need to get out of your car. Our staff will not put their seat belts on.
  • Our mobility car parks are in operation in both carparks, so please ensure that these are used only for the purpose they were designed. Unless you have a mobility card and the card holder is in the car then the spaces must be kept clear.
