Learning Conservations – Wednesday 16 June and Thursday 17 June

The learning conversations are three-way conferences with the teacher, child and parent. Three-way conferences take the form of a conversation between the child, the parents and the teacher as they sit together and talk about the child’s learning, with the child taking an equal role. This approach give children an opportunity to share with their parents their growth as a learner. The three-way conferences are designed to achieve one or more of the following goals:

  • to help children demonstrate evidence of learning,
  • to teach children the process of reflection and self-evaluation,
  • to facilitate the development of child’s organisational and oral communication skills and to increase their self-confidence,
  • to encourage children, parents, and teachers to engage in open and honest dialogue,
  • to encourage children to accept personal responsibility for their learning.

Times for Learning Conversations are:

Wednesday 16 June 12:30pm – 5:30pm and Thursday 17 June 3:15pm – 6:00pm

On Wednesday 16 June the school will close at 12.00pm, can you please collect your child at this time this is only for Wednesday 16 June. The  Stillwater bus will be running from 12pm on this day.

Kids Corner

Room 27 and 29 have been working hard on their writing.

”Start!” Shouted the teacher. So my legs pumped up and I began my fun run. I passed my opponents with speed. Boom crash no aw my arm. “Come on, Jared you can do it!!” Shouted Malan. So I stood up and the blood in my veins rushed with speed and I ran like it was the last chocolate and I did. When I got close to the end dundundundun nooo!! That was not the end. I didn’t stop. “Jared, wait no, I’ll meet you at the end.” Shouted Malan. I kept running and I was so amazed that I made it.

Boom! Went the tree as it fell down into the lush green grass. “What a beauty, now I’m going to chop this up” Said the Lumberjack. A couple of hours later he was sitting on the couch in his little cottage with a cup of tea, while watching tv. Later on he went to bed. The end.

A gush of excitement rushed through me but at the same time there was a tingle up my spine. I felt a bit nervous before the race. Suddenly Mrs Kitching shouted “Goooo!” Everyone was smashing and crashing against each other to get to the front of the herd, I nearly fell but I just managed to get up amongst all the comotion. It was very loud with all the kids screaming.

I was extremely excited for the fun run. I was nervous because there were lots of people. The teacher shouted “Go!” When I was running I ran as fast as I could, I felt out of breath. I was running with Xavier.

By John Du Preez Room 27

As I approached the starting line I felt ready to win the race. Before the race started everyone yelled stop pushing. When the race started I tried running as fast as I could. I passed a lot of people when I zoomed fast. I ran with Archie and Josh the whole time.

School Docs

Our school uses SchoolDocs for our policies and procedures.

The school works on a subscription basis with SchoolDocs to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies which have been well researched and follow the Ministry of Education National Administration Guidelines. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behaviour management, reporting to parents, etc.

SchoolDocs updates, modifies, or creates policies in response to changes in legislation or Ministry guidelines, significant events, reviews/requests from schools, and regular reviewing from the SchoolDocs team. Our board of trustees has the opportunity to view changes/additions and comment on them before they are implemented. We will advise you when policies are up for review and how you can take part in the review.

We invite you to visit the site at http://silverdaleprimary.schooldocs.co.nz/ (note that there’s no “www”). Our username is silverdaleprimary and password millwater.

Reading at Silverdale School

Some children will be bringing the same reader home several nights in succession.  They will be practising some of the skills below, and once they are able to read the book with mastery of these skills they will move on to another book.

Some nights they will bring different books home; this will be because at the first reading they were able to read the book with the necessary skills.

It is important that they learn to become as independent as possible, so if your child makes a mistake or cannot read a word, PAUSE before helping.  Let them attempt to work the word out by themselves.  If they are struggling, give them the word.

Enjoy your time listening to your child read.  They will respond to this with a feeling of confidence and will want to read.

Teachers are working very thoroughly on each text, teaching the children to:

  • Read with expression and fluency
  • Retell a story in sequence
  • Learn some aspect of word study, e.g. endings of words
  • Instantly recognise basic sight words that occur in the book
  • Read with self-monitoring skills, i.e. self-correct when errors are made, make an independent attempt when faced with an unknown word

Guidelines Around Reading At Home

  • Find a time that suits everyone.
  • Make it an enjoyable, fun, stress free time.
  • Find a nice, quiet place. It’s a great time to have a cuddle.
  • Praise, praise, praise you child and celebrate their success.
  • Model reading to your children – if they see you reading and you explain why you are reading it will give them more meaning.
  • It is ok for books that come home to be easy for your children.
  • Re-reading a book is valuable as there are many different skills they are learning in class and need to revise.

Helpful Hints for Reluctant Readers…

If your child doesn’t want to read –

  • Look at the pictures. Can they retell the story to you?
  • Connect the story to their own life experience.
  • Take turns. You read a page and then your child can read a page.
  • You can read the story to them, modelling fluency or punctuation.
  • Keep it up beat and fun. Reading needs to be enjoyable!

HBC Inter School Chess Tournament

On Monday 60 students from years 3 – 6 played 7 rounds of chess against each other, Wentworth Primary and Whangaparaoa Primary.  We were very strong across all players and took the overall win for the day.  Congratulations to all our players for participating, especially Harper Craw who took out the ranking of top female player of the day, Yifan Jiang for 2nd, Ernesto Pfeiffer for 3rd and Oscar Stevens who came out top as chess champion.  It was a fun day had by all and we all took away a new move or two and new skills.
