Pink Shirt Day – Monday 17 May

“Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!”

Silverdale School Pink Shirt Day is on Monday 17 May, we will be having a gold coin mufti day on Monday 17 May. Pink Shirt Day is celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying, after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In Aotearoa, Pink Shirt Day works to create schools, workplaces, communities and whānau where everyone feels safe, valued and respected.

This May people across Aotearoa will come together to take action against bullying and fundraise to support the kaupapa.

KERI

KERI is our school mascot who is the guardian of our school. KERI is a karearea and the karearea was chosen because it was our Year 7/8 intermediate team name. Also it is a strong and resilient bird whose prowess is clearly recognised.

Like the karearea, we want our learners to take their learning to new heights. We want them to take risks in their learning and constantly push their boundaries exploring their learning world. We want them to try new challenges and share their growing learning power.

Our Team Names Meaning

The choice of Te Ohanga (The Nest), Kiwi, Pukeko, Tui as our team name fits with our school motto – Learn to Journey – Journey to Learn, Ako ki te Haere – Haere ki te Ako, from our fledgling learners through to our learners who push the boundaries of their learning.

Team Te Ohanga

A nest provides those that live in it all that they require to survive; food, warmth and shelter. It is a place to be nurtured and loved.

Our nest for the Year 0 and 1’s is the starting place for all our learners to begin their learning journey. Everyone starts in the nest needing similar requirements to help them grow and become independent. The Nest nurtures our students and makes them have a love for coming to school, a love for learning, and realise that school is a place to have fun.

Team Kiwi

The kiwi is well grounded searching through the undergrowth for their food, ideally adapted to suit their environment. While they do not use their wings they are still there ready to use should the need arise.

Our young learners are like this, fossicking amongst all that is to be learned, absorbed and adapted to suit the environment and each individual.

Team Pukeko

The pukeko is a bird that takes ownership of its world, engaging in short bursts of flight. The pukeko is eternally inquisitive, wanting to know everything that goes on about it.

Our Year 3 and 4 learners are like this – taking those bursts into learning, retracing their steps, seeking clarity and beginning to really push those boundaries of  learning.

Team Tui

The tui is a striking bird who is no longer a ground dweller but seeks to explore the tree tops. The tui is one of the early birds to announce its presence and sing with great skill and delight.

Our young people in Team Tui are like these birds. They are flexing their learning muscles, enjoying life and take their learning into the wider world. They embrace life and learning.

Fun Run
On Monday 17 May in conjunction with Pink Shirt Day, Silverdale School will be holding it’s annual Whole School Fun Run.  Students are encouraged to wear as much pink as they can find and a gold coin donation to support Pink Shirt Day and their anti bullying campaign.

Racing will start from 11.45am with interval times for each year level.
Year 0-2 will hold their fun run around the school field completing two laps with running underway at 12.00pm.
Year 3-4 will hold their fun run around a shorter course around Millwater Parkway with running underway at 11.55am.
Year 5-6 will hold their fun run around the longer course around Millwater Parkway with running underway at 11.45am.
For those in years 3 – 6 who wish to run a 2nd lap of their designated course, they are more than welcome.

Children are encouraged to wear sport shoes to run in however, if they prefer to run in bare feet they will need to be careful. If your child is unable to participate due to injury, please contact your child’s class teacher.

A map is attached to show the fun run circuit.  You are welcome to come along to watch and support your child around the courses.

Traffic Lights

Please make sure that you stop on the yellow light at the traffic lights outside of school. Before and after school is a busy time with children and parents using the lights to cross the road, we do not want an accident to occur because you run the red light. Please reduce your speed and look out for children. A yellow signal means stop, unless you are so close to the intersection that you can’t stop safely. A yellow signal indicates that the lights will soon turn red. If you fail to do this then the penalties are $150 fine and 20 demerit points if you fail to slow down and stop when traffic lights turn yellow (unless you cannot stop safely).

The Resilience Project

We are pleased to have The Resilience Project’s wellbeing curriculum in our classrooms this year. The Resilience Project delivers emotionally engaging programs and provides evidence-based, practical strategies to build resilience. As part of the programme students will take part in weekly lessons and will receive their own journal/workbook.

Kelly Club is kindly subsidising the cost for our students. The $10 fee goes towards the cost of the journal for your child. If you are interested in finding out more about the programme visit https://theresilienceproject.co.nz/.

The Resilience Project is a schoolwide programme from Year 0-6 that provides practical, evidence-based, positive mental health strategies to build resilience and happiness. The programme focuses on three key pillars that have been proven to cultivate positive emotion; Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM). The programme also has a strong focus on Connection, Purpose, Kindness, Emotional Literacy and Physical Health. As part of the programme children receive a journal that they will use in their weekly lessons.
