Sandy Evans Manaakitanga Memorial Award for Term 4
Sandy Evans, was teacher aid at Silverdale School for 16 years. She died suddenly in a tragic accident in January 2012. Sandy had an enormous empathy for all students and particularly those she worked with.
Silverdale School Board created a Manaakitanga Memorial for Sandy as they felt she embodied the principles of manaakitanga – extending the hand of friendship, finding positives in all activities, exemplifying tolerance, kindness and empathy to others.
This memorial will be awarded at the end of each term at the final assembly of the term to the student that staff feel is the most worthy recipient from the designated team.
Guidelines for awarding the Manaakitanga Memorial
- Consistent application of being kind to others.
- Going the extra mile without seeking recognition.
- Positive mind set to self and others.
- Ongoing evidence of respect, tolerance and empathy for others.
- Consistently showing our KERI Values of Kindness/Atawhai, Excellence/Hiranga, Respect/Whakaute, Integrity/Ngākau pono
This terms’ award goes to a truly exceptional student and a valued member of Silverdale School. From the first day I met her, she welcomed me with a warm, bright smile that lit up the whole classroom. I knew straight away that she was someone special. She shows our KERI values every single day. She manages herself well in every kura setting, whether at swimming week, assemblies, or kapa haka. She always looks for the positives in things, even when others might be feeling negative, and she is always ready to help her classmates.
She has made great progress across the curriculum. She has a creative mind and a busy brain that never stops, often surprising me with her thoughtful words and ideas. She’s never afraid to take on challenges, big or small, and always goes the extra mile in everything she does. She is well-liked by her peers and has formed strong friendships. She consistently shows kindness and respect, and her enthusiasm and positive attitude brighten our classroom every day.
It has truly been a joy to be her teacher. If it were possible, we often joked that she could run the class when I’m away—and knowing her, she’d have everyone organised before the bell even rang!
This term’s recipient is Amelie Ringleff

New Zealand Traveller Declaration
Going overseas for the school holidays? Everyone travelling into New Zealand must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration, including returning New Zealand passport holders.
Its FREE and you can do it on the online form or on the NZTD app.
If you’re travelling as a family or group and completing multiple declarations, the NZTD app allows you to copy your travel details into another declaration, making it easier to complete multiple declarations for the same journey. The submitted declarations are then all easy to see within the app.
The New Zealand Traveller Declaration collects travel, customs, immigration and biosecurity information and aims to improve the safety and security of New Zealand. It replaces the paper card you used to fill out on the plane.
To make your arrival easier, do your digital declaration before your flight back to New Zealand.
Head to travellerdeclaration.govt.nz today!
