Giving Effect to the Principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
With Parliament passing amendments to the Education and Training Act removing the requirement for school boards to give effect to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. I want to let everyone know that Te Tiriti o Waitangi is and will remain, an essential part of our kura’s governance and leadership. The government’s decision in this matter does not align with our KERI Values or the vision we hold for our tamariki and our community. Silverdale School will continue to uphold Te Tiriti in our kura.

Sustainability Challenge
Last week we had a large number of children from Team Tūī representing our school at Auckland Councils Sustainability Challenge.
What is the Sustainability Challenge?
It’s a race for teams of 4 students, who will compete in a two-hour event, which includes a mix of running/walking, navigation and sustainability-based activities. Teams have to navigate to as many checkpoints as they can, collecting points for each checkpoint visited. To earn extra points teams can complete sustainability themed activities which will require some research and teamwork. Examples of activities could be to identify native bird calls, match a pest to the correct trap used or make something from flax.
This event aims to help students:
- Foster a sense of kaitiakitanga for our Auckland regional parks, raise awareness of how special they are, the threats posed to them and how students can make a difference by taking positive action for the environment.
- Work together as a team developing key competencies
- Enjoy and value the ‘ecological sustainability’ of our regional parks.
This event took place on 14 November at Long Bay Regional Park.
Our team of Maddy, Ana, Alice and Alinda came fourth overall and won the Year 5-8 event. Well done girls.Thank you to everyone who helped out on the day. Thank you to Whaea Pip, our fantastic enviro teacher for organising all the teams.

Silverdale Snakes Leaving the Court on Top.
On Tuesday 4 November, the Silverdale Snakes won the Basketball League C Grand Final at Stanmore Bay. This was a great finale for the team, most ofthe team has been representing Silverdale School for the last 4 years and it was a great way to send them off. The team had a perfect record in the regular games and continued this into the finals. The team had a great team spirit and their hard work in training certainly paid off.
