School Closure – Thursday 23 October due to NZEI teachers, support staff and principal strike.

Kia ora Silverdale School Whānau,

We are writing to inform you that Silverdale School will be closed on Thursday, 23 October due to strike action by members of NZEI Te Riu Roa, the union representing many of our teaching staff.

Unfortunately, due to limited staffing on the day, we are unable to safely open the school and ensure appropriate supervision and care for our students. The health and safety of our tamariki is our highest priority, and we appreciate your understanding during this time.

We acknowledge the disruption this may cause to your whānau and thank you for your continued support of our school community.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact Cameron.

Ngā mihi nui,

Silverdale School Board

Country Show Day Mufti (no uniform) Day

On Friday 17 October the school will have a mufti day (no uniform) for our Country Show Day. Please send your child to school with a gold coin to support the PTA fundraising efforts.

Country Show Day

Our famous Country Show Day is this Saturday from 10.00m to 2.00pm. This fantastic day is our major school fundraiser for the year. Our amazing PTA has spent months and months organising this day and it will be a great day. For those of you who are new to the school, Silverdale School used to be a small rural school and we are in our 154st year as a school. In the past our children were encouraged to raise a farm animal, caring for and training the animal so that they can proudly show them in the animal ring on the day, to be crowned champion and then go onto the Helensville A&P Show to compete against other children from around the district. Children were still bringing in animals as late as 2016. The reason that we still keep the name Country Show Day is to keep with tradition and remember where we have come from. I look forward to seeing many of our community on Saturday.

Silverdale School Girls Cricket Shines

What an outstanding performance from our Silverdale girls’ cricket team at last week’s tournament

The team was unbeatable, securing wins in all four of their games! While we didn’t bring home the overall trophy (which was awarded to Torbay for entering the most teams—five in total), our girls truly stole the show with their attitude and effort.

A massive congratulations goes to Maddie Hendry, who was deservedly given the Spirit Award by ECB for her team. This perfectly sums up the day: the girls showed incredible sportsmanship, cheering each other on positively and supporting the opposition.

They were a credit to our school, conducting themselves brilliantly and listening well to the coaches. This was a well-run event and a fantastic initiative for girls’ cricket—we definitely plan to support it again! Ka pai tō mahi.

Rubbish

We are noticing an increased amount of gladwrap and food packets being left around school after eating times. We are a zero waste school so all wrappings must go into the children’s lunchboxes and be taken home for disposal. You could help your child by minimising the number of wrappers put into their lunchboxes. Boxes with compartments work well and mean that wrappers aren’t needed at all.

School Donations

Our school donation is $200 per child or $50 a term. This money was used to pay for a large number of additional curriculum resources, subsidise a number of school wide activities such as art, dance and drama resources, sporting functions, developmental material and related photocopying and other essential resources.  No child was excluded from using these resources but it does seem that quite a number of families relied on the goodwill of others to support their child.

Each term the School Board puts all the names of those donations that have been made into a draw to give one child the chance to have their fees paid for the following term. The families that have received these in the past have been very grateful. We understand that a donation is voluntary and that it can be at times very difficult to manage. Mrs Reid in the office, is very happy to discuss possible arrangements for meeting this cost for your child.  Each small contribution adds up across the course of time and helps to enhance the substance of this school.

A huge thank you to all those families who paid their donation this year.

Congratulations to Kira Vannan’s family who paid their term 3 donation and won it back this term.

Sun Smart

During term 1 and 4 it’s compulsory for children to wear the school hat when outside. There are many reasons why we make wearing hats compulsory, you just need to look at the statistics.

Statistics

    • Over 4000 people are diagnosed with either melanoma in situ or invasive melanoma every year in New Zealand – that’s around 11 every day.
    • It’s the fourth most common cancer in New Zealand and accounts for nearly 80% of all skin cancer deaths.
  • Around 300 New Zealanders die of melanoma every year.
  • New Zealand and Australia have the highest melanoma incidence rate in the world.
  • Although Maori and Pacific people have a lower chance of getting melanoma, they often have thicker, more serious melanomas.

School Hat Orders

These can be purchased via Kindo.  A report is run daily at 9.30am.  The hats are then labelled and handed out to the students.
