Thank you to everyone who has helped our school in any way this term. Your help and support is really appreciated by everyone here at school. We have strong community support for our school and we are very lucky to have this. Don’t forget that Country Show Day is on Saturday 18 October and early next term we’ll be asking for class volunteers to help supervise Country Show Day stalls. We will be asking for just an hour of your time on Saturday 18 October, so don’t forget to sign up for that next term.

Term 4 starts on Monday 6 October and finishes on Friday 19 December at 12.00pm.

Silverdale School Celebrates Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori

Tēnā tātou e te whānau o Te Kura o Te Weiti,

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, a national celebration of the Māori language, has arrived, and we will be celebrating this taonga/treasure in our kura across the week. This year marks the 50th anniversary of when Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori was first celebrated!

As a kura, we will celebrate with the nation and would love for you to join us at home too. You can ask your tamariki what they have been up to each day and follow the videos and daily kupu from our Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori Overview doc.

Each lunchtime, we will be hosting workshops that celebrate Te Reo Māori. These workshops will involve kemu/games, poi, haka and waiata. This is an opportunity for all tamariki to come and have a go and further immerse themselves in the culture and the language. On Friday, kaiako will participate in a kemu on the courts playing Tapu-ae

To add to the celebrations of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, on Paraire/Friday, te 19 o Hepetema/September we will have a special assembly to finish the day at 2:00pm. We will have performances from our Junior Pūkeko Kapa Haka and Tū Māia Rōpū on the courts; this will be an incredible culmination of what looks to be an amazing week. All whānau are welcome to come along!

On Taite/Thursday, te 18th o Hepetema/September at 12pm, we will all stop what we’re doing for the Māori Language Moment. At the kura, we are going to do a whole school haka on our courts, but you can join in too, in your own way. Follow this link to participate. You can kōrero (speak), waiata (sing), pānui (read) and more – Whatever you do, do it in te reo Māori.

Most importantly, from Monday to Sunday / Mane ki te Hanarei, challenge yourselves as a whānau to get involved and learn some new phrases or kupu/words together.

New Board

Welcome to Jessica Drey, Graham Franklin, Gair McSkimming, Jamie Summers, David Powles and Sarah Betts (staff representative) who have been elected to the Silverdale School Board for the next three years. Thank you to everyone who nominated for our school board.

Thank you to Dayna

A great big thank you to Dayna Anderson, who decided not to re-stand for a position on our Board. We are so grateful for all the hard mahi and dedication she has put into our school. We wish her all the very best for the future.

NZEI Strike Day – Thursday 23 October

Primary teachers, primary principals, support staff, kaiārahi i te reo, therapists and Ministry of Education field staff and support workers have all voted to take strike action together on 23 October.

Across the motu, we are all driven by the same thing: we’re frustrated by the lack of progress in our negotiations and we’re deeply worried about the future of education in this country.

You don’t attract or retain good people to work with tamariki/children if you don’t provide fair pay and good conditions.

And you don’t support tamariki/children by prioritising tax breaks for tobacco companies over investment in education.

We know New Zealand’s parents and tamariki/children depend on us every day. When their children go to school, they need us there to support them. But right now, we’re finding it increasingly hard to do this important work. And the Government is ignoring our calls for more learning support and to uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi in education.

More information will come our in Term 4 with what this will look like for Silverdale School.

Congratulations Anthony for being the Primary School winner of Barfoot & Thompson Young Authors Challenge for 2025

Anthony has won a $500 cash prize and $250 book voucher, and for our school he has won us a $1,000 cash prize and $1,000 worth of books.

This is his winning entry:

I have a time machine, and I’m going to use it to stop racism!

I turned it on to travel back in time to find out who started racism in the first place.

In a blink, I arrived. People in the old days sure looked different from us.

Wait a minute… they’re not people! Or… not yet?

They saw me! I’d better run!

“Hey, you’re back!” Mom said. “How’s it going so far?”

“Not great,” I sighed. “I think I pressed the wrong button. This time, I’m going to try the future!”

And zip! I was there in a microsecond.

I looked around. People in the future sure looked… futuristic.

“Hello, are you human?” I asked.

“Yes, of course,” they responded.

“Why do you all look like robots?”

“Because in the future, people are robots!”

“What do you eat then?” I asked.

“We don’t eat. We power ourselves with super solar energy!”

“Well, in that case… I’ll go home.”

“Welcome back again! Got any ideas on how to stop racism now?” Mom asked cheerfully.

“Well,” I shrugged, “it seems like we all come from the same ancestors in the past. And we’ll all become robots in the future. So what’s the point of being mean to each other just because we look different now?”

“Sounds pretty persuasive to me.”

“And I just realized what’s more important than those big questions.”

“What?”

I gave her a hug.

“Coming back to someone you love… and having some ice cream!”

Traffic Concern

We have been contacted by Auckland Traffic with concerns regarding the increase in parents dropping their children off on Longmore Lane, by the roundabout and in the bus parking area, and the impact this is having on the school buses as they cannot manoeuvre past the cars.

For your own safety, and the safety and convenience of other road users, there are certain areas where you must not park or stop your vehicle. You risk being fined $60 and/or having your vehicle towed away if you park in these areas.

You must not park or stop your vehicle (this includes pulling over to let your children out):

  • where it will be in the way of other people using the road (including pedestrians)
  • on a marked bus stop or taxi stand
  • in front of, or closer than 1 metre to, a vehicle entrance
  • on ‘no stopping’ lines (broken yellow lines) marked within 1 metre of the edge of the road, which you may see near pedestrian crossings, intersections, driveways or narrow roads.

Please do not park or stop to let your children out on broken yellow lines, it’s for the safety of ours and your children. There is plenty of parking at Metro Park carpark, by the cricket nets and it is only a 400m walk to and from school. Children can walk there and they don’t cross any roads. This is a safe option for children.

Car Free Day – 2025

Silverdale School will be celebrating Car Free Day on Friday 19 September. Our aim as a school is to have as many students come to school car free. Travelwise will be set up on the courts with spot prizes and a banner to sign.  Come and celebrate with us!

What is World Car-free Day?

Taking place on the 22 September, World Car-free Day is an annual celebration of cities and public life, free from the noise, stress and pollution of cars. This is a fantastic chance to discuss the importance of exercise with your children as well as the impact of cars on the environment.

Silverdale School will be celebrating Car Free Day on Friday 19 September.

Why do we celebrate World Car-free Day?

Motor vehicles emit carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, which are major causes of global warming. World Car-free Day is celebrated to help the environment and bring awareness to what we can all do to help. This wonderful event encourages everyone to give up their cars for a day and consider alternative ways of travelling, for example walking and cycling to school/work more often.

On Friday 19 September, come to school Car Free!

Meet the Travelwise Leaders on the courts to sign our school banner. Last year, we had over 350 signatures – how many can we get this year?

Car Free Day – Better for the planet, better for us!
