Teacher Only Day – Friday 15 August
School will be closed on Friday 15 August for a teacher only day. This day will be a professional development day for the staff on the Aotearoa New Zealand’s Maths curriculum.
What Did You Do At School Today?
What did you do at school today? How many times have you asked that question and got the reply “nothing”? A useful way for students to reflect on their learning experiences at school is to ask them the following questions.
- What’s going well at school?
- Which was the hardest part of your day?
- How did you deal with it?
- How else could you have done it?
- What could you do when you are stuck on new learning?
- What would have made that easier for you?
- What mistakes did you make that you can learn from?
- Is there anything else you know that might help?
- How could you help someone else with their learning?
- How did it feel when you had finished?
Successful Lockdown Practice at Silverdale School
I’m pleased to share that our lockdown practice today was conducted with great success and efficiency. Our students and staff responded calmly and effectively, demonstrating their understanding of our safety procedures.
These drills are a vital part of our commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for everyone at Silverdale School. Practicing these procedures regularly helps our tamariki and kaiako know exactly what to do in a real emergency.
We were incredibly proud of how quickly and quietly everyone moved into their designated safe spaces. This smooth execution is a testament to the hard work of our staff in teaching these protocols and the excellent cooperation of our students.
Thank you for your understanding and support as we continue to prioritise the safety and well-being of our school community.
Red Nose Day Mufti Day
A huge thank you to everyone who participated in our recent Red Nose Day mufti day in support of Cure Kids. Thanks to your incredible generosity, we were able to raise a fantastic $870.70. Every dollar donated goes directly towards vital child health research, helping Cure Kids find cures and better treatments for serious health conditions affecting children in New Zealand.
Orewa College first te reo Māori immersion programme for Year 7 and 8 students.
We’re pleased to let you know that from 2026, Orewa College will be launching its first te reo Māori immersion programme for Year 7 and 8 students.
This initiative builds on the fantastic mahi already happening in our local schools to strengthen Māori provisions and revitalise te reo Māori in our community.
About the programme:
- 80% of instruction will be delivered in te reo Māori, supporting language development, wellbeing, and leadership through a te ao Māori lens.
- Students will also have access to English-medium teaching for literacy, numeracy, and specialist subjects such as the arts, science, technology, and PE.
- Tamariki will remain fully involved in all aspects of kura life – sport, cultural events, leadership opportunities, and extracurricular activities.
Students do not need to be fluent in te reo Māori to apply. The programme is designed to meet learners where they are, with a focus on growth over time, strong whānau involvement, and the support of dedicated kaiako and senior leaders.
