The learning conversations are three-way conferences with the teacher, child and parent. Three-way conferences take the form of a conversation between the child, the parents and the teacher as they sit together and talk about the child’s learning, with the child taking an equal role. This approach give children an opportunity to share with their parents their growth as a learner.

Times for Learning Conversations are:

Upcoming School Board Elections

As our school continues to thrive, we are approaching an important time in our governance cycle: the upcoming School Board Elections. This is a vital opportunity for our community to actively participate in shaping the future direction of Silverdale School.

Our School Board plays a crucial role in setting the school’s strategic direction, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment, and overseeing the school’s performance. It works to ensure every child receives the best possible education.

Why should you consider getting involved? Being a Board member is a rewarding way to contribute to your child’s education and the wider school community. It allows you to:

  • Use your skills and experience to benefit the school.
  • Help set the school’s vision and goals.
  • Ensure that all students’ needs are met.
  • Represent the voice of our diverse community.

Who can stand for election? Anyone who is a parent or caregiver of a child at Silverdale School, or a member of our wider community, is eligible to stand for election. We encourage individuals from all backgrounds, with diverse skills and perspectives, to consider putting their name forward.

Key Dates to be aware of (approximate, official dates will be confirmed):

  • Mid August 2025: Call for Nominations opens. Nomination forms will be available from the school office.
  • Early September 2025: Nominations close.
  • Mid September 2025: Voting papers sent to eligible voters.
  • Early October 2025: Voting closes.
  • Mid October 2025: New Board takes office.

We will share more precise dates and detailed information, including how to nominate yourself or someone else, in upcoming newsletters and on our school website.

In the meantime, if you have any questions about the role of the Board or the election process, please feel free to contact me, or our Presiding Member, David Powles (davidpowles@silverdaleprimary.school.nz).

Your involvement, whether by standing for election or by casting your vote, is incredibly valuable. We look forward to your participation in this important process.

Sandy Evans Manaakitanga Memorial Award for Term 2

Sandy Evans, was teacher aid at Silverdale School for 16 years. She died suddenly in a tragic accident in January 2012. Sandy had an enormous empathy for all students and particularly those she worked with.

Silverdale School Board created a Manaakitanga Memorial for Sandy as they felt she embodied the principles of manaakitanga – extending the hand of friendship, finding positives in all activities, exemplifying tolerance, kindness and empathy to others.

This memorial will be awarded at the end of each term at the final assembly of the term to the student that staff feel is the most worthy recipient from the designated team.

Guidelines for awarding the Manaakitanga Memorial

  1. Consistent application of being kind to others.
  2. Going the extra mile without seeking recognition.
  3. Positive mind set to self and others.
  4. Ongoing evidence of respect, tolerance and empathy for others.
  5. Consistently showing our KERI Values of Kindness/Atawhai, Excellence/Hiranga, Respect/Whakaute, Integrity/Ngākau pono

The Manaakitanga Award in Term 2 was chosen from Team Pūkeko.

Manaakitanga is about care, respect, generosity, and uplifting others. This student lives out every day, not with noise or attention, but with quiet strength and a truly beautiful heart.

She is a proud Samoan who carries with her a deep sense of service, humility and alofa for others. She has shown incredible resilience/manawaroa when things are difficult, adapting with grace, maturity and a positive spirit. She is open to feedback and always seeking ways to grow, not for recognition, but because she genuinely wants to do the right thing.

The chosen recipient goes above and beyond the expectations of her age. She works with some of the trickiest kids in our class, with patience, compassion and calm, helping them feel seen and understood. She steps in to resolve conflict, searching not for blame but for a solution that works for everyone. She consistently puts others first, always looking out for those who might need support and always showing empathy/ngākau aroha and kindness/atawhai.

She has that rare ability to connect with anyone and work well in any group. Her attitude is positive, her work ethic is strong, and her heart is huge. She is a true example of manaakitanga, responsible, trustworthy, humble and incredibly kind.

Congratulations to Sophia Albert for receiving this award at our last assembly. Sophia, we are so proud of you. You are a stunning human being and a taonga in our kura.

Fa’amalo, malo le taumafai. Congratulations and well done.

Congratulations

A huge congratulations to our two year 5 netball teams for a great showing at the Mid-Season Netball North Harbour Tournament on Sunday 13 July.  It was a high energy tournament, with 27 teams entered.  The Silverdale Stars team played four fantastic games and had one huge win and three super close matches.  Everyone gave it their all, worked together brilliantly, and showed amazing sportsmanship throughout the day. A big shout-out to Indy King (year 4) who stepped up to help the Stars.   The other Silverdale team in the competition was Silverdale 5/1. With only 7 players and no subs, these girls worked tirelessly and with so much heart – and came away with 3 wins and one narrow loss.

The tournament was a fun and exciting way to wrap up the school holidays.  With big smiles, fair play and competitive spirit, the year 5 netballers represented Silverdale School and our KERI values proudly!  Ka pai girls!

Orewa College

Rumaki Reo Māori
Total Immersion Learning

In 2026, Orewa College will proudly launch our first-ever Rumaki Reo Māori programme for Year 7 and Year 8 ākonga. This Level 1 total immersion pathway offers ākonga the opportunity to learn primarily in te reo Māori, supported by kaupapa grounded in te ao Māori, mātauranga Māori, and tikanga Māori.

“Ka whakatōkia te reo, ka tipu te reo.” By planting the seed of te reo Māori, we support it to flourish.

Our Rumaki Reo classes are designed for tamariki who thrive in a Māori-medium setting, while still accessing key areas of English-medium learning. This includes Reading, Writing, and Mathematics, as well as specialist learning areas such as science, technology, the arts, and physical education.
Tauira will remain fully connected with the wider kura, participating in Year 7 & 8 events and activities including sports, leadership, and extracurricular opportunities.

Importantly, a high level of te reo Māori proficiency is not required for initial acceptance. The programme scaffolds language growth over time, encouraging confidence and development in a supportive, inclusive environment.

“We’re creating a space where te reo Māori is lived every day. Whānau are vital partners in this journey,” says one of our kaiako Māori.

Orewa College will open with two dedicated rumaki classrooms in 2026. As this is a special programme, enrolment is open to both in-zone and out-of-zone whānau, with limited spaces available.

Families who express interest will be invited to a hui with our kaiako Māori. This is a chance to kōrero, share aspirations, and explore how the programme can support your tamaiti.

We welcome whānau who are passionate about Māori-medium education and committed to the revitalisation of te reo Māori.
