Welcome Back to Term 2

A very warm welcome to all our returning students and a special greeting to our new families/whānau – we’re delighted to have you here. It was lovely seeing everyone back on Monday. Your child’s teacher is your first point of contact for any questions or concerns. Feel free to connect with them via phone, email (find their details on www.silverdaleprimary.school.nz), or in person. If you’d like to meet with me, please contact the school office to arrange a time.

ANZAC Day Service

On Friday 25 April Carter Roberts and Lorelei Peat represented Silverdale School at Orewa ANZAC Day Service. Carter read Ode of Remembrance in English and Lorelei read Ode of Remembrance in te reo Māori. They both did themselves, their whānau and our school proud.

Ode of Remembrance

(by Lorelei Peat – Silverdale School)

E kore rātou e kaumātuatia

Pēnei i a tātou kua mahue nei

E Kore hoki rātou e ngoikore

Ahakoa pēhea i ngā āhuatanga o te wā.

I te hekenga atu o tō rā

Tae noa ki te aranga mai i te ata

Ka maumahara tonu tatou ki a ratou.

“KA MAUMAHARA TONU TĀTOU KI A RĀTOU”

Ode of Remembrance

(by Carter Roberts – Silverdale School)

“They shall grow not old,

As we that are left grow old;

Age shall not weary them,

Nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun

And in the morning

We will remember them”

 “WE WILL REMEMBER THEM”

Teacher Only Day

The school will be closed on Friday 30 May for an Kāhui Ako ki Orewa teacher only day with Orewa Primary School, Wainui School, Dairy Flat School and Orewa Beach School, Ahutoetoe School and Nukumea School.

KERI

KERI is our school mascot who is the guardian of our school. KERI is a karearea and the karearea was chosen because it was our Year 7/8 intermediate team name. Also it is a strong and resilient bird whose prowess is clearly recognised.

Like the karearea, we want our learners to take their learning to new heights. We want them to take risks in their learning and constantly push their boundaries exploring their learning world. We want them to try new challenges and share their growing learning power.

Our Team Names Meaning

The choice of Te Ōhanga (The Nest), Kiwi, Pūkeko, Tūī as our team name fits with our school motto – Learn to Journey – Journey to Learn, Ako ki te Haere – Haere ki te Ako, from our fledgling learners through to our learners who push the boundaries of their learning.

Team Te Ōhanga

A nest provides those that live in it all that they require to survive; food, warmth and shelter. It is a place to be nurtured and loved.

Our nest for the Year 0 and 1’s is the starting place for all our learners to begin their learning journey. Everyone starts in the nest needing similar requirements to help them grow and become independent. The Nest nurtures our students and makes them have a love for coming to school, a love for learning, and realise that school is a place to have fun.

Team Kiwi

The kiwi is well grounded searching through the undergrowth for their food, ideally adapted to suit their environment. While they do not use their wings they are still there ready to use should the need arise.

Our young learners are like this, fossicking amongst all that is to be learned, absorbed and adapted to suit the environment and each individual.

Team Pūkeko

The pūkeko is a bird that takes ownership of its world, engaging in short bursts of flight. The pūkeko is eternally inquisitive, wanting to know everything that goes on about it.

Our Year 3 and 4 learners are like this – taking those bursts into learning, retracing their steps, seeking clarity and beginning to really push those boundaries of  learning.

Team Tūī

The tūī is a striking bird who is no longer a ground dweller but seeks to explore the tree tops. The tūī is one of the early birds to announce its presence and sing with great skill and delight.

Our young people in Team Tūī are like these birds. They are flexing their learning muscles, enjoying life and take their learning into the wider world. They embrace life and learning.

Ngākau Manawaroa

Ngākau Manawaroa draws on the main pillars of The Resilience Project –  Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy to build resilience and mental well being. We changed the names of our focus areas to better reflect who we are as a kura. We incorporated Te reo Māori and the symbolism of hearts, placing inner strength and resilience at the centre of our tamariki.

Ngākau Manawaroa consists of explicit lessons which are differentiated across all year levels. Whilst each lesson across the year levels has different content, they are organised in such a way that they are focusing on the same theme. This enables us to share a school wide focus for the week which is reinforced through our KERI assemblies which are held fortnightly on Monday mornings.

The lessons found in Ngākau Manawaroa incorporate our school values of Kindness/Atawhai, Excellence/Hiranga, Respect/Whakaute and Integrity/Ngākau Pono. The lessons are structured so that our Learner Assets are highlighted, enabling teachers to draw students focus to the type of learner asset they are using for a particular task.

By incorporating our School Values, Learner Assets and Te Ao Māori we have developed a programme which is specific to our kura and is unique to us.

If you would like to find more about The Resilience Project that Ngākau Manawaroa has been developed from, please visit theresilienceproject.com.au/ .

Ngākau Marino – Having a calm heart is about mindfulness. How do we practise mindfulness? Mindfulness activities help us to be present in the moment and often create a feeling of calm. We practise this through slowing down and concentrating on one thing at a time.

Ngākau Mataara – An understanding heart refers to emotional literacy. Being aware of our own emotions helps us to understand them. When practising Ngākau Mataara  children develop their language to convey how they are feeling.

Ngākau Reka – A grateful heart refers to having gratitude. What is gratitude? It’s about paying attention to the things and moments we have right now, and not worrying about what we don’t have. We practise gratitude by noticing the positives that exist around us, and by being thankful for things, places and people in our lives.

Ngākau Aroha – A loving heart represents having empathy. Empathy and kindness are closely linked. So are empathy and compassion. To be empathetic is to put ourselves in the shoes of others to feel and see what they are. We practise this by being kind towards other people.

Ngākau Manawaroa – Consists of explicit lessons which are differentiated across all year levels and taught weekly. Whilst each lesson across the year levels has different content, they are organised in such a way that all tamariki focus on the same theme. This enables us to share a school wide focus for the week which is reinforced through our KERI assemblies which are held fortnightly on Monday mornings.
