Alert Level 2

The Prime Minister confirmed yesterday that Cabinet is discussing the requirements for Alert Level 2 and she will announce their decisions on Thursday. The Director of Public Health will provide the specific requirements for education – these will also be announced on Thursday.

That means we will get the public health requirements for education and associated health and safety guidance on Thursday.

This health and safety guidance will include:

  • Managing health and safety.
  • Supporting staff to return to work.
  • Curriculum, teaching and learning – some students will need to continue to learn from home for example if they are self-isolating
  • Staffing provisions (pay and leave).
  • Managing school transport.
  • Supporting health and wellbeing in our community.
  • Supporting students with additional learning needs, including residential special schools and day special schools.
  • School hostels, homestays and supporting international students.

A decision about when New Zealand will move to Alert Level 2 will be made by Cabinet on Monday 11 May. The Prime Minister has said that the move to Alert Level 2 would occur with 48 hours’ notice.

Once a decision has been made about whether or not we move to alert level two, I will be communicating to you all what this will look like at Silverdale School.

COVID-19 symptoms

Symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to a range of other illnesses, such as influenza.

Having them does not necessarily mean that you have COVID-19.

Symptoms include:

  • a cough
  • a high temperature of at least 38°C
  • shortness of breath
  • sore throat
  • sneezing and runny nose
  • temporary loss of smell.

These symptoms do not necessarily mean you have COVID-19. The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu.

Shortness of breath is a sign of possible pneumonia and requires immediate medical attention.

If you have these symptoms please call Healthline for free on 0800 358 5453 or you can call your doctor immediately. If you’re outside New Zealand call +64 9 358 5453 or your doctor. Call your doctor before visiting.
